PARIS, May 27 (Reuters) – The world number two Elena Rybakina a été éliminée à la surprise générale merderi dès the second tour of Roland-Garros on the Ukrainian Yuliia Starodubtseva (3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4)).
Winner of the Australian Open in January, her second “Grand Slam” title, the 26-year-old Kazakh was “completely toppled” on the Suzanne-Lenglen court. After winning the first set, she lost nine of the next ten games.
Trailing 3-0 in the deciding set, Elena Rybakina managed to force a super tie-break, which she lost on her opponent’s second match point.
The 2022 Wimbledon champion made no less than 71 unforced errors during the 2h28 match.
“It’s really a shame because I thought I was training well before Roland Garros, I thought I could raise the level but today it was a very bad performance, too many unforced errors. I didn’t feel the best,” she analyzed at a press conference.
“The energy wasn’t there. I just couldn’t find the right balance on the ball, it was slippery.”
We have to go back to 2022 and the elimination in the first round of the Czech Barbora Krejcikova to find trace of a lead from series n°2 absent from the third round of the women’s draw on the Parisian clay.
At best a quarter-finalist in the Parisian Grand Slam in 2024, Elena Rybakina nevertheless had the opportunity to steal world No. 1 for the first time in her career during “the fortnight.
However, she presented herself at the Porte d’Auteuil in first place in the “race”, the ranking of the season, thanks to her titles at the Australian Open and the WTA 500 in Stuttgart (Germany), on clay, as well as her final at the WTA 1000 from Indian Wells (United States).
The winner of the 2025 Masters opens the lower part of the table a little further, which notably includes Iga Swiatek and Elina Svitolina, potential opponents in the quarter-finals.
Yuliia Starodubtseva, 55th in the world and finalist of the WTA 500 in Charleston (United States) in April, will face the Chinese Wang Xiyu, 148th in the world, in the next round.
