Faced with warning shots by Iranian forces aimed at four ships trying to cross the strategic strait, four attack drones which represented a “threat around the Strait of Hormuz” were shot down, an American official announced to AFP on condition of anonymity. He also added that the American army had also struck “a ground control station in Bandar Abbas which threatened to launch a fifth drone”.

Iranian media for their part reported Thursday around 1:30 a.m. (12 a.m. Paris time) three large explosions near Bandar Abbas, a port city on the strategic Strait of Hormuz. “These actions were measured, purely defensive and carried out with the intention of maintaining the ceasefire”a affirmé le responsable américain.

In retaliation, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced that they had targeted an American base, according to state television Irib. They did not specify which one, but for its part, the Kuwaiti army announced Thursday that it was pushing back “attacks from enemy missiles and drones”.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry then strongly condemned the US strikes on the coastal town of Bandar Abbas. Iran will take “all necessary measures to defend its national sovereignty”assured the spokesperson for the ministry, Esmaïl Baghaï, in a press release which evokes the “continued ceasefire violations by the United States, including attacks on commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf and on the high seas, as well as airstrikes in recent days against southern Iran”. He further denounced the “threatening rhetoric from American officials against Iran and several countries in the region”following statements by Donald Trump on Oman.

On Wednesday, the American president once again threatened a resumption of hostilities while negotiations between Iran and the United States to end the conflict are struggling to progress, and the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked by Iran.
