Wednesday May 27, 2026, the president of Crif reacted on X (formerly Twitter) following the anti-Semitic intimidation and threats suffered by personalities from the world of culture. “When culture becomes the instrument of conformism and intimidation, it becomes nothing more than ideology.”

“Joann Sfar, Barbara Butch… Stop anti-Semitic intimidation in the world of culture!

Joann Sfar and Barbara Butch are resolutely pacifist voices regarding the Middle East. And yet, new inquisitors are attacking them in recent days for their positions on Israel or on anti-Semitism.

So what are they guilty of if not… being Jewish?

In the world of culture, a logic of blackmail and exclusion is progressing before our eyes, where everyone must now show their credentials to have the right to be included.

So what is this climate of purge which is eating away at culture in France? Are we condemned to publicly vilify Israel for permission to speak or perform?

Those who attack Joann Sfar with the cry of “Zionists out of our city” do not support the Palestinians. They hide behind the Palestinian cause to hunt down Jews.

Those who attack Barbara Butch do not want peace in the Middle East. They want to silence the voices that refuse to howl with the pack.

Those who proclaim “Genocide!” at the slightest speech of surrender by Caesar or Molière, are not looking for the truth, they are making their com’ on the back of the distress of the Palestinian civilians thrown into this war by Hamas.

When culture becomes the instrument of conformism and intimidation, it becomes nothing more than ideology.

Support for Joann Sfar, Barbara Butch, Sophia Aram, Arthur, Amir, Enrico Macias and many others…

Working for peace means firstly defending pluralism in France.

The Ministry of Culture must take the necessary measures to ensure respect for freedom of expression and artistic creation. »
