On the occasion of the official ceremony for handing over the national flag to the national A football team, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a strong speech to the Lions of Senegal that was both solemn and mobilizing. Between tribute to the team’s journey, call for unity and assumed ambition for the 2026 World Cup, the head of state urged the African champions to wear the colors of Senegal high.
“A part of the Senegalese soul”
In a solemn atmosphere, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye recalled the full symbolic significance of the presentation of the national flag to the Lions. According to him, this gesture goes far beyond the protocol framework, because it represents “a part of the Senegalese soul” entrusted to the players who will defend the national colors on the world stage.
The head of state saluted a generation which marked the history of Senegalese football by offering the country a second continental star. Returning to the African coronation, he recalled the popular momentum and national unity aroused by this victory celebrated “in the streets, in the houses, in the villages, in the neighborhoods and in the diaspora”.
For him, this team has become much more than a national selection. It now embodies collective pride and a symbol of hope for an entire people.
An assumed global ambition
Faced with the players, the President of the Republic gave a speech of truth. He insisted that Senegal will not go to the World Cup to make up the numbers.
“You don’t go there to admire the great nations,” he declared, before asserting that Senegal now has its place among the nations that count in world football.
According to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, this place was won thanks to the sacrifices of several generations of players, coaches, managers and supporters. He notably paid tribute to the historic epic of 2002 as well as to the different generations who contributed to the growth of Senegalese football.
The head of state also spoke of the progress of African football on the world stage, believing that the ceiling of African selections could now be broken after the presence of an African country in the semi-final during the last World Cup.
Discipline, solidarité et humilité
In his address, the Senegalese president especially insisted on the values which must guide the Lions during the competition: discipline, unity, solidarity and humility.
According to him, great teams are not built solely on individual talent or club prestige, but on “this invisible bond” that pushes players to fight for each other in difficult times.
He warned the Lions against overconfidence, recalling that the World Cup “forgives neither dispersion nor near-premises.”
“Play with intelligence, patience and daring,” said the president, inviting the players to maintain this “quiet pride” specific to Senegal.
The weight of a people’s expectations
In his speech, Bassirou Diomaye Faye reminded the Lions that they will wear much more than a jersey on the World Cup pitches.
According to him, the players will represent the dreams of youth, the prayers of families, the expectations of the diaspora as well as the hope of millions of Senegalese attached to their national team.
The head of state called on the players to remain faithful to their values, in particular courage, dignity and solidarity, while remaining united in the face of the difficulties that a global competition has in store.
“It’s not when the match is easy that you recognize a great team. It’s when she goes through fire without losing her order, her faith and her unity,” declared the President of the Republic to applause.
