European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, visiting Vilnius on Tuesday, blamed recent drone alerts in the Baltic states on Russia, accusing it of seeking to “destabilize democratic societies” in the EU.

“Air alerts, families taking refuge in shelters, schools closed, transport suspended. This is the reality on Europe’s eastern border in 2026,” declared Ms von der Leyen in the presence of the Presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

“These are not isolated incidents, this is a deliberate strategy by Russia which seeks to destabilize our democratic societies. But just like on the battlefields in Ukraine, Russia is failing,” she added during a press briefing.

The Czech charge d’affaires summoned by Moscow after the arrest of a Russian Orthodox dignitary

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it had demanded “the unconditional and immediate release of Metropolitan Hilarion as well as an end to the persecution of representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Czech Republic.” Moscow also denounced, in a press release, “the absurdity and total lack of basis of the accusations” of possession of narcotics.

On Sunday, four containers containing “a white substance” were discovered by Czech police in the trunk of Hilarion’s car. The cleric, aged 60, “categorically rejects” any accusation of possessing narcotics.
