Is going to the movies too expensive? As from Sunday to Tuesday, the ticket will cost only 5 euros thanks to the Spring of Cinema, the question arises regularly in debates on the attendance of movie theaters. People compare the price of a ticket to that of subscriptions to platforms (14.99 euros per month for Netflix, 10.99 euros per month for Disney + or 6.99 euros per month for Prime Video, for standard plans). And they highlight the highest prices, which sometimes exceed 20 euros. However, according to the figures from the National Cinema Center (CNC), the average ticket price was 7.42 euros in 2025.
Cinema is more expensive than before, certainly… But it is increasing less than other prices. Between 2024 and 2025, the cost of a cinema ticket increased by 0.4% while inflation was 0.8%. Sixteen years ago, in 2010, the average ticket price was 6.32 euros. If the price of movie theaters had followed inflation, going to the cinema would cost an average of 8 euros today. “We have a real communication problem about the price of a cinema ticket,” acknowledges Richard Patry, president of the National Federation of French Cinemas.
