WELCOME TO THIS LIVE
Hello everyone, welcome to this live broadcast dedicated to the conflicts in the Middle East.

According to the American Constitution, only Congress is empowered to declare war and the Democrats thus wish to reaffirm the authority of the legislative power on this issue in the face of the executive power represented by Donald Trump. While the law allows the president to initiate hostilities to respond to an imminent threat, it requires that he obtain authorization from Congress within 60 days. However, at the beginning of May, Donald Trump ignored this deadline by arguing that due to the ongoing ceasefire with Iran, the conflict was over.
The Democrats dispute this argument and counter that American forces are still engaged there to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports. Several Republican elected officials had affirmed that, after this 60-day period, they could begin to require the executive to obtain authorization from Congress. But despite the votes of three Republican senators, too few members of the majority joined Democrats on Wednesday to pass the resolution.
“Many of our colleagues are uncomfortable with their current position, but they are also uncomfortable with the idea of alienating Trump.”
Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley, author of the resolution, told the press before the vote.
For Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, these Republican elected officials “will have another chance to vote next week, and the week after that”
. “We’re going to force a vote on this issue every week until the Senate says we shouldn’t be at war. And I think that day will come soon.”
he added.
