The buzz of a Shahed drone, then impact. kyiv (Ukraine) was under a deluge of Russian fire on the night of May 13 to 14. In 48 hours, 1,500 drones and more than fifty missiles were launched by Moscow (Russia), according to the Ukrainian Air Force. The anti-aircraft defense did not manage to intercept everything.

In the heart of the capital, a building was hit. Nine floors and 18 apartments were destroyed in an instant.”A missile went off from there. I was in the hallway at the time and it exploded and I was thrown backwards.”says an injured man, still stunned by the explosion. Surprised in their sleep, other residents were trapped under the thick concrete blocks. Emergency services tried to free them with the help of local residents. “I heard a woman’s cry as a last hope. I rushed towards her and started digging in the rubble. She was stuck under a concrete slab,” says a young man.

At least 16 people were killed and around 40 injured in the massive attack, one of the worst since the start of the war. Russia resumed its offensive, having completed a very short three-day ceasefire. For residents, there has been no lasting truce for more than four years. “This ceasefire was just a bluff. We have heard this kind of statement from Putin before. We can’t trust him. The war continues and it is treacherous“, criticizes Vitali Klischko, the mayor of kyiv.

Peace talks between kyiv and Moscow have stalled, on hold since the start of the Middle East war.
