RÉCIT – With Keir Starmer under threat of an attempted overthrow, the British sovereign observed tradition by delivering the speech outlining the prime minister’s legislative agenda.

In the midst of political chaos, there was something reassuring in seeing tradition unfold its ritual for the speech from the throne. As if the kingdom was not as sick as the news suggests. However, the moment had a strange taste. Charles III presented the annual program of a Prime Minister who may not celebrate Christmas in Downing Street. Because, after his failure in the local elections last Thursday, the major maneuvers for the landing of Keir Starmer continue. He is far from being out of the woods, while his Minister of Health is preparing to formally challenge the leadership of the party from Thursday.

Since his accession to the throne in September 2022, this is the third time that Charles III – committed to political neutrality – has engaged in this exercise which consists of reading a speech that he did not write.
