The University of New Mexico’s fraternity and sorority community raised a record-breaking $57,000 for Storehouse New Mexico during Greek Week 2026, more than doubling fundraising totals from previous years.

The annual, student-run event brought together nearly 700 students across 19 chapters for a week of competitions, service, and fundraising efforts aimed at supporting a selected nonprofit.

“This is the closest Greek Week has ever been in terms of competition, but at the end of the day, Storehouse won,” said Chris Brooks, Student Activities advisor for fraternity and sorority life.

Greek Week, which has been held at UNM for decades, is organized each year by a student committee and guided by staff advisors. This year’s committee, led by student chair Tessa Hefty, selected Storehouse New Mexico as the beneficiary after learning more about food insecurity in the state.

Throughout the week, students participated in events including Greek Sing, trivia night, and team competitions, all while raising funds and awareness for the organization. Chapters hosted their own fundraising activities, from on-campus events to outreach efforts with family and friends.

In addition to monetary donations, students collected 8,660 pounds of food for Storehouse and contributed approximately 500 hours of community service across Albuquerque through projects such as park cleanups and support at local service centers.

The combination of fundraising, service, and education helped students better understand the broader impact of their efforts.

“This week reminds students that they are part of something bigger,” Brooks said. “We are here for the purpose of helping others, not just ourselves.”

This year marked a significant increase from past efforts, which typically raised between $20,000 and $34,000 annually. The introduction of a live fundraising platform, along with increased participation and engagement, helped drive the record total.

Brooks said the impact of Greek Week extends beyond the final fundraising total, creating lasting connections between students and the community.

“It shows students what they are capable of,” he said. “When they see the impact they’ve made, it reinforces that their work matters and encourages them to stay engaged beyond this one week.”

The week concluded with the annual Greek banquet, also organized by students, where the fundraising total was announced and the check was presented to Storehouse New Mexico.

While competition remains a key element of Greek Week, organizers emphasized that the event’s true success lies in its shared purpose.

“We can talk about which chapter won, but that’s not the story,” Brooks said. “The story is what this community accomplished together.”
