Disney would like to bring some order to its digital services. According to several sources of Bloombergdiscussions are underway to create a single application capable of bringing together all of its offers. At the center of this strategy: Disney+, set to become much more than a simple streaming platform.
An all-purpose app at Disney
In this expanded version, the user could watch a movie, reserve a ticket for a park, buy a merch or launch a game without leaving the application. The idea is to avoid multiplying downloads and offer a single entry point to the entire Disney ecosystem.
This project, described internally as a “super app”, would involve the merger of several existing applications, notably those dedicated to parks or cruises. A way to correct a dispersion that has become difficult to follow for users, but also for the group itself. For the moment, nothing has been decided. Discussions are at an early stage and no concrete developments have yet been initiated. Disney, for its part, has not commented.
This is not the first time that Disney has imagined combining its services. Under Bob Iger, the idea had already been circulating for years. A more limited attempt had even been tested in the United Kingdom, without convincing enough to be extended.
The obstacles are well identified: applications designed separately, different technical infrastructures and sometimes complex broadcasting rights. The ongoing merger between Disney+ and Hulu shows that this type of project can quickly become complicated. Since his arrival at the head of the group in March, Josh D’Amaro seems determined to rekindle the subject. In front of shareholders, he explained that Disney+ had to evolve “beyond a traditional streaming service » pour devenir « the company’s digital center ”.
This orientation is accompanied by a rapprochement between entertainment and video game activities. The new boss is notably an observer on the board of directors of Epic Games, and pushes to better connect these universes.
Disney is also looking at user-generated content and artificial intelligence. But everything did not go as planned: OpenAI abruptly ended its Sora video generator, which led to the abandonment of a partnership estimated at a billion dollars. This was to allow subscribers to create their own content based on Disney characters.
