An “angel” dies in ICE detention: What happened to this Afghan man detained by ICE agents in Dallas (Texas)?
Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, a 41-year-old man of Afghan origin, died in the United States on Saturday, less than a day after being arrested by ICE agents in Dallas, according to CNN Politics. Paktyawal was apprehended in front of his apartment and taken directly to a detention center. During his medical visit, he complained of shortness of breath and chest pains. Despite being in good health, he was hospitalized a few hours later with a swollen tongue and ultimately succumbed on Saturday morning.
He had fought alongside American soldiers
The father of six children aged 18 months to 15 years, Paktyawal arrived in the U.S. in 2021 when the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan. He had fought in his country and at the border with Pakistan alongside U.S. forces. This fact has been confirmed by associations and American media. Refugié outre-Atlantique, il bénéficiait d’un statut particulier et d’une “libération humanitaire” due à son service dans l’armée. Cependant, ce statut aurait expiré en août 2025, selon l’ICE. “Ils l’ont emmené vivant, et nous récupérons un mort,” denounced the spokesperson for the Afghan community in Dallas.
More than 190,000 Afghans have sought refuge in the U.S. since 2021. However, the Trump administration’s immigration policies have made their situation precarious, leading to many of them being arrested by ICE. Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal is the twelfth person to die in a detention center since the beginning of 2026.
