JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
A 35-year-old woman was killed early Monday morning when a pick-up truck driving the wrong way on I-10 hit her SUV head-on, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash, which was reported just after 2 a.m. Monday, shut down all lanes of I-10 eastbound near Chaffee Road.
Troopers said the 27-year-old man driving the pick-up truck ran away from the scene but was quickly caught by law enforcement responding to the crash.
Troopers said the woman was headed east on I-10 in the center lane when the pick-up truck, traveling west on the wrong side of the highway, slammed into her head-on.
The truck flipped after the collision, landing on its roof. That’s when the man, who suffered minor injuries, got out and tried to run away, troopers said.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
The woman died at the scene.
Traffic was being detoured onto Chaffee Road. From there, drivers can take Crystal Springs Road to Hammond Boulevard and then hop back onto I-10 east from there.
Back-ups to get onto Chaffee Road are over 35 minutes, as of 6:40 a.m.
As of 11:30 a.m., all lanes were back open.
