Pablo Mateo doesn’t have much time to waste at the start of the outdoor season! The AC Lisses athlete will participate in the World Relay Championships on May 2 and 3 in Gaborone, Botswana.
For this competition, the sprinter from Essonne will be part of the men’s 4x100m team and the mixed 4x100m team, along with Mohammed Badru (Caen Athletic Club), Just Kwaou-Mathey (Évreux AC), Lenny Chanteur (ESME US Deuil), Aymeric Priam (CA Montreuil), Théo Schaub (AC Illzach Kingersheim), and Guadeloupe’s Ylann Bizasene (Stade Lamentinois).
“I want to run as fast as possible and win medals”
“I have been competing in athletics for twelve years now. Before that, I had a background in football, with stints at Corbeil-Essonnes, Lisses, and Évry-Courcouronnes,” explains the reigning French champion in the indoor 60m, a title he won in late winter in Aubière, Puy-de-Dôme.
“I had a good indoor season. However, I expected to perform better on the international stage. It remains motivating for the future,” adds the athlete from Lisses.
Pablo Mateo has no regrets about choosing athletics tracks over football fields. “In this sport, I appreciate the discipline that is instilled. There is also a lot of mental work involved. It is also a thankless sport, with a lot of sacrifices for results that are not always up to expectations. However, it builds mental strength and personality,” confides the determined athlete, who is set to represent the national team at a relay world championship for the third time.
“The goal is to qualify the French team, both in the men’s and mixed relays, for the European Championships in Birmingham, and then for the upcoming world championships. We had a training camp in Mauritius just before this competition to work on some elements,” explains the 100m and 200m specialist, while setting his individual ambitions for the rest of the season: “It’s simple, I want to run as fast as possible and win medals.”
