Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Bayern Munich on Tuesday night at Parc des Princes in a historic first leg of the Champions League semi-final, with a score of 5 goals to 4.
In a match full of excitement from the 17th minute, after a well-taken penalty by English forward Henry Kane, the Parisians turned the game around in a completely open first half, going up by three goals (5-2) with doubles from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and current Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele.
Never before had a match in this competition seen five goals scored in a single half. PSG also became the first team to score three goals before halftime in this stage since Real Madrid in 2014 against Bayern.
However, in a nail-biting finish, Bayern Munich closed the gap to one goal (5-4), setting up a thrilling second leg in Germany.
“I have never experienced a match with such intensity,” said PSG coach Luis Enrique, praising “an unprecedented pace” and “two teams with a strong personality.”
On the other hand, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, who watched the game from the stands due to a suspension, promised a response: “We will give everything until the end, even if it kills us. If there is 1% chance, we believe in it.”
This spectacular and uncertain clash even caught the attention of football stars like Erling Haaland, who summed up the evening with a simple “this is football” on social media.
With just a one-goal lead, PSG holds a fragile advantage ahead of what promises to be an electrifying second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
