On Saturday, April 25, during the White House correspondents’ dinner, a shooter entered the hotel where the event was taking place. The main suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was apprehended by law enforcement. He will be presented in court on Monday, April 27.
The traditional White House correspondents’ dinner turned into chaos on Saturday, April 25. While Donald Trump was seated with Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and several members of his government at a large hotel in Washington, a shooter entered the hotel lobby. Armed with multiple weapons according to the information provided by the American president during a press conference, the shooter, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, was arrested, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. The motives behind the suspect’s actions are still unclear.
31-year-old Allen, a California native heavily armed with a rifle, pistol, and knives according to law enforcement, was staying at the hotel. This allowed him to easily access the secured area, as the hotel entrance remained accessible, with strict security controls only at the event’s ballroom where the dinner was held. Without any political affiliation, Allen obtained a mechanical engineering degree from Caltech in 2017, was named teacher of the month at C2 Education specialized in exam preparation in 2024, and then earned a master’s degree in computer science the following year at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Upon returning to the White House, Donald Trump promptly addressed the events, describing the main suspect as a “lone wolf” and a “potential assassin” who intended to kill. Trump expressed his belief that the shooter was a mentally unstable lone wolf, stating that such individuals must be dealt with. He also commended the law enforcement’s “courage” and remarked that the hotel hosting the White House correspondents’ dinner was not particularly secure.
While the Oval Office occupant wasted no time in sharing a picture of the suspect, shirtless, face down, and handcuffed on his Truth Social network, US authorities announced that the suspect would appear in court on Monday. He will face charges for using a firearm in a violent crime and assaulting a federal agent with a dangerous weapon. During the attack, a Secret Service agent was hit by gunfire, but thankfully, his bulletproof vest did its job effectively, according to President Trump.
