A court in Rio de Janeiro made an unfavorable decision against the Rhone club in a transfer case. Lyon contests the procedure and has fifteen days to appeal.
The court ordered Olympique Lyonnais to pay the sum of 21 million euros; equivalent to 122.3 million Brazilian reais, to the Brazilian club Botafogo. The information, revealed this Wednesday by the media Globo, marks a first judicial setback for the French club in this dispute. The dispute concerns amounts that the carioca club considers unpaid, related to what the procedure defines as “phantom transfers.”
OL has not been notified
For its part, Olympique Lyonnais distances itself from this decision. The club stated to the daily newspaper l’Équipe, that it was not involved in the procedure and claims to have received no official notification to date. This position raises a central legal question: the validity of such a decision on French soil, and its potential financial consequences for an economically weakened club. It will depend in particular on Botafogo’s ability to obtain the execution of the judgment outside Brazilian territory. OL has fifteen days to appeal.
