Teamwork, not staying alone in your swimming lane… Sports metaphors abound to describe this project that brings together the successive hosts of the 2026, 2030, and 2034 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The initiative, officially launched during Milan-Cortina, aims to strengthen cooperation between the different host territories of the global sporting event, the South and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes for France (2030), Lombardy for Italy (2026), the State of Utah and the City of Salt Lake City for the United States (2034). “The idea is not simply to take turns, but to transmit, compare, align, and collectively learn to make the Games a sustainable and inclusive lever for our territories,” says Renaud Muselier. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has endorsed the project, winner of the “Sport and centralized cooperation” call for projects.
“At the heart of our challenges are risk management, promoting good practices, improving air quality, and managing water resources,” Renaud Muselier continues. These themes are organized into five working groups that will brainstorm until December 2027 on the sustainability of the Games, particularly focusing on biodiversity, access to sports for all, promotion of elite sports, civil society participation, and heritage in a broad sense, whether economic, heritage, or cultural. In this context, four experimental scientific pilots have already been launched, led by the academic stakeholders of the consortium, the University of Côte d’Azur and The University of Utah.
