Vietnam Ambassador to Brazil highlights cooperation prospects in science, technology
The statement was made by the Vietnamese Ambassador to Brazil, Bui Van Nghi, during a meeting with Professor-Doctor of Science, quantum physicist Olival Freire Junior, president of the National Council for Science and Technology Development of Brazil.
During the meeting, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi shared information on the socio-economic development of Vietnam and the achievements of bilateral relations between Vietnam and Brazil in recent years.
Ambassador Bui Van Nghi emphasized that since the establishment of a strategic partnership between Vietnam and Brazil in November 2014, bilateral relations have continued to develop positively in many areas, benefiting from the attention of high-level leaders as well as the participation of the people, businesses, and local communities of both countries through bilateral visits, working sessions, and contacts.
Especially in the economic and trade sector, the volume of bilateral exchanges is expected to reach 7.76 billion U.S. dollars in 2025, with a goal of reaching 15 billion U.S. dollars by 2030. Brazil remains Vietnam’s top trading partner in Latin America, while Vietnam plays a crucial role as a gateway for Brazil to access the ASEAN market and the Asia-Pacific region.
According to Ambassador Bui Van Nghi, in addition to economic and trade cooperation, the two parties have strong potential and room for further development in their relations and cooperation, particularly in the fields of education and training, culture and arts, sports and tourism, and especially in science, technology, and innovation.
In the field of science, technology, and innovation, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi stated that Vietnam is implementing major policies for the development of these sectors, in line with Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on significant advances in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation. In this context, Vietnam aims to strengthen cooperation with Brazil in key areas such as renewable energies and environmental technologies, while developing activities in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technologies, and the semiconductor industry. These areas are priorities for Vietnam’s development, which plans to train around 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030 to build a highly skilled workforce for a growing digital economy.
Ambassador Bui Van Nghi expressed hope that in the future, the Brazilian National Council for Science and Technology Development would strengthen its ties with leading research institutes in Vietnam.
Professor-Doctor of Science Olival Freire Junior stated that the Brazilian National Council for Science and Technology Development aims to enhance cooperation in science, technology, and innovation with Asian countries, especially Vietnam.
Olival Freire, President of the Brazilian National Council for Science and Technology Development, expressed his wish to strengthen information exchange and promote substantial and long-term cooperation in the field of science and technology with Vietnam.
Highlighting the enormous potential for cooperation between Brazil and Vietnam in connecting research institutions, universities, and enterprises from both countries, Olival Freire encouraged Vietnam to enhance cooperation with Brazilian companies operating in the areas of research, technology, and innovation.
The Brazilian side particularly welcomed the prospects of cooperation in key sectors such as advanced agriculture, ethanol production (biofuel from sugarcane), electronics, and the semiconductor industry. The two parties also reviewed the progress made in implementing cooperation agreements concluded during the first meeting of the Joint Committee on Science and Technology between the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation and the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology in September 2025, emphasizing the need to materialize these commitments through tangible cooperation projects.
At the same time, the two parties agreed to continue to examine and identify priority areas and actively seek new cooperation opportunities in the future, based on the development needs and strengths of each country.
