A valuable reinforcement. While currently wearing the jersey of the Glasgow Warriors (Scotland), Johnny Matthews will play for US Montauban starting next season, as announced by the last-place team in the Top 14 on Tuesday, April 7th.

Two selections with the Scotland National Team

Born in Liverpool in 1993, Johnny Matthews, who has considerable experience as a hooker (108 matches played with Glasgow and two selections with Scotland), is set to explore a new league wearing the Tarn-et-Garonne jersey.

However, he will not arrive as a mere tourist in Montauban as he will reunite with two of his former teammates, prop Lucio Sordoni and lock Lewis Bean, whom he played with at the Warriors.

A true product of Scottish development, he is coming to strengthen our pack for the next three seasons (until 2029),” stated the USM in a press release.

Formidable finisher

With the unique distinction of having played only for one club throughout his career, this Scottish international (1m83 tall and 110 kg) is also well-known across the Channel for his formidable finishing abilities.

Indeed, Johnny Matthews has scored 51 tries in 110 professional appearances, including 16 in just one season (2023-2024).

With almost one try every two matches, USM fans shouldn’t have to wait long to see their new recruit in action at Sapiac from next August.
