Speaking at the event, Secretary-General and President To Lam said that Resolution 06 sets goals for the development of foreign policy in the new period that are commensurate with the historical and cultural stature and position of the country.
This will contribute to the achievement of the country’s strategic objectives: building a peaceful, independent, democratic, prosperous, civilized and happy Vietnam, steadily progressing towards socialism.
Foreign relations constitute a “crucial and ongoing” task.
According to the Secretary General and President, Vietnam’s foreign policy, which is entering a new era of national development, reflects a change in mentality, clearly illustrated by major ideological principles.
As a result, foreign relations are defined as a “crucial and permanent” task, becoming an important method and a key and continuous element in the construction, protection and development of the country. In the new era, external relations must occupy a central place and contribute to quickly identifying and resolving the risks of conflict and war, remotely and at the source.
In this new era, foreign relations are not only a tool for protecting national interests, but also a means of demonstrating Vietnam’s character, identity and prestige on the international stage; it is a means of spreading Vietnamese values and civilization, generating respect, trust and exerting influence within the international community.
Foreign policy must be based on a spirit of strategic autonomy and self-sufficiency. It must guarantee the highest national interests, place the people at the heart of all policies, and regard contribution to the international community as a responsibility. At the same time, foreign policy is the concern of the entire Party and the entire people, mobilizing the combined strength of the entire political system and the country.

Secondly, foreign relations should become a driving force for the opening of new development spaces, organically linked to the process of socio-economic development of the country, contributing to attracting external resources and favorable conditions for the rapid and sustainable development of the country.
Third, actively participate and contribute responsibly to solving common problems of the international community, thereby strengthening Vietnam’s role and position in multilateral mechanisms.
Fourth, raise the status of the nation to match its historical importance, cultural identity and position, making a positive contribution to human civilization.
Fifth, establish a global, modern and professional diplomacy, up to the strategic challenges of the new era, contributing to the achievement of national development objectives by the middle of the 21st century.
