“La Famille Bélier” : a tenderly kooky portrait (indifferent to good taste) – Telerama

A small French comedy that doesn’t aim too high but, thanks to cinema magic, attracted 7.5 million spectators to theaters. And earned Louane Emera the César Award for Best Female Newcomer in 2015.

The young Paula Bélier faces a dilemma. Should she follow her calling? The one that, set since childhood, makes her indispensable to her parents: a translator and spokesperson, she is the only one in the family who is not deaf-mute. Or should she listen to her voice instead? Almost by chance, at high school, she discovers her talent for singing, thanks to her teacher (Eric Elmosnino), a fan of Michel Sardou.

This quirky whim alone sets the tone of the movie. Tenderly kooky, indifferent to good taste. “La Famille Bélier” is a warm sign language group portrait carried by the duo François Damiens-Karin Viard. Eric Lartigau (I Do: How to Get Married and Stay Single) plays with reversing the roles.
