Geopolitics: The Time to Choose Between Foreign Causes and Reason of State

The term “new world order”, coined in 1991 in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, will only truly take shape on the international stage during Donald Trump’s second term. All signs and indicators now point to its emergence, as highlighted by the editorialist of the daily newspaper “Al Ahdath Al Maghribia” in Monday’s edition. When Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, declared a few weeks ago that the former world architecture, including the United Nations, belonged to the past, he was simply putting into practice Donald Trump’s vision. It was with this perspective that keen observers had been anticipating the elimination of the supreme Iranian leader, aware that this outcome was inevitable.

They also knew that the October 7th offensive had no other objective than to hinder Saudi Arabia’s accession to the Abraham Accords. As we wrote at the time: “this plan would fail, and Hamas, followed by the Palestinian people, would pay a heavy price”. They will be joined in this painful settling of scores by all those who claimed to be part of the “axis of resistance”. This axis, in reality, consisted of authoritarian leaders convinced that tyranny, coupled with a hypocritical defense of the Palestinian cause, was their only bulwark to stay in power.

Their fall was as spectacular as dominoes falling: Bashar al-Assad forced into exile in Moscow, Hassan Nasrallah eliminated in Lebanon, Ismael Haniyeh in Tehran, Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, while Nicolás Maduro was apprehended even in the confines of his palace. Now, the advocates and standard bearers of this cause will no longer sing songs, organize outings or night marches to try to digest the bitter “harira” of this new geopolitics. Unable to grasp its subtleties, they will have no choice but to resort to street demonstrations.

The wise, on the other hand, will strive to find a refuge for his nation in this planetary reconfiguration, defending only the higher order of his country. He will remain loyal to his land and his state, in this case Morocco, without ever becoming a champion or herald of foreign causes. If he is authentically Moroccan, he will understand that the age-old wisdom of the homeland, its genius, and its deeply rooted heritage have preserved it from the pitfalls where others have stumbled, notes the editorialist of “Al Ahdath Al Maghribia”.

This indicates that the world map is being redrawn, and only the most lucid will find their place in it. This new world will offer opportunities only to brilliant minds, capable of undergoing the necessary transformation and taking decisive steps.
