US Army uses a new missile in “Epic Fury” operation

  • The American army has confirmed using a new ballistic missile for the first time in combat during the “Epic Fury” operation.
  • Known as the “Precision Strike Missile,” it has increased range and lethality compared to its predecessor, the ATACMS.

It made its debut in the “Epic Fury” operation. Like in every conflict, the war in the Middle East between Iran and the United States and Israel serves as a testing ground for new or previously unknown weapons. In early March, the US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed using a new tactical ballistic missile in combat for the first time. Its name: the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) or “missile de frappe de précision” in French.

Range of over 400 kilometers

Fired also by the Himars launcher, the Precision Strike Missile is the successor to the old US Army tactical missile system (ATACMS), long sought by Ukraine from the US to strike Russian positions in depth. With a range that “exceeds 400 kilometers,” compared to 300 kilometers for its predecessor, the Precision Strike Missile “represents a quantum leap in precision strike capabilities,” the US army said in a statement. Future versions of the missile could extend its range up to 1,000 kilometers, it added.

According to a New York Times investigation, this new missile developed by the US army, which is “barely out of the prototype testing phase” and doesn’t even have an official name yet, struck a sports center in the city of Lamerd, Iran, killing 21 people on February 28th, the first day of the “Epic Fury” operation. Lockheed Martin and the Department of Defense announced a framework agreement last week to quadruple the PrSM production capacity. The US Army has not disclosed how many missiles of this type are currently in production.
