Valentijn Driessen recommends confining Frenkie de Jong to the substitutes’ bench, an analysis which greatly surprises former Dutch international Wesley Sneijder. The latter considers that it is still too early to judge the midfielder after a single World Cup match.
“Koeman will have to intervene. Gravenberch was very good, Reijnders was invisible and Frenkie was as we know him: a drag. Koeman will have to make a decision at some point. And it wouldn’t be a bad thing at all if Koeman sent a signal by benching Frenkie,” Driessen wrote in The Telegraphbefore reiterating these remarks in lémission Today Inside Oranje.Â
Asked by journalist Noa Vahle about these comments, Sneijder replied: “I think Frenkie can bring a lot more, especially in the offensive phase. He’s still a little too cautious. It’s not serious, but he must raise his level as the tournament progresses. HAS”
