They were once one of the most feared football teams in the world. L’Germanythat’s four World Cups (and four finals lost), and three Euros (for three finals lost). With world-class players like Gerd Müller, Franz Beckenbauer, Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, Miroslav Klose, she was able to establish herself as one of the best nations football player of all time.Â
An interesting brand image for the federation, which, from 2015, officially installed the nickname The teamwhich literally means “the team”, the one, the only. A nickname that has fallen into total disuse on the other side of the Rhine, where The team ended up getting another widely rejected.Â

Too arrogant for the Germans

The defeats at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and at Euro 2020 (in 2021) weighed down the footballing hopes of the German population, who began to say that, perhaps, it was a little arrogant to talk about yourself as the one and only team.Â

A thought that was already occupying the minds of many Germans, but as long as “the team” was winning, they let it slide.

Also, the Germans stopped nicknamed their national team Die Mannschaft, and began to favor DFB-Team (for Deutscher Fußball-Bund, German Football Association), DFB-Elf (the DFB eleven), DFB-Auswahl (the DFB selection) or Nationalelf (the national eleven).Â

Obviously, the German federation, listening to the population, jumped on the bandwagon and removed this name as an official nickname dès 2022. A decision that came at the right time, because a few months later, the Germans (in a strong group with Spain and Japan, it should be noted) were eliminated from the pools of the World Cup in Qatar. This year, they are well present at the 2026 World Cup, in group E, facing Curaçao, Ecuador and Ivory Coast.
