Is the explosion of artificial intelligence limitless? Large language models now surpass humans’ ability to influence other humans, a worrying prospect in terms of mass manipulation. Faced with the owners of these companies, what safeguards? How can Europe stand out?
Author of the book Ultra-intelligence, how far will AI go? (Éditions Odile Jacob), engineer Aymeric Roucher deciphers the meteoric rise in power of so-called “ultra-intelligent” artificial intelligence. His book focuses in particular on the laws of scaling: by multiplying the training power by ten, the models gain a notch in intelligence, without a visible ceiling, to the point of promising AIs “smarter than Einstein”.
Regulate at the risk of increasing the delay?
This dynamic fuels a global race between the United States and China, while Europe locks itself, according to him, into a logic of regulation which disqualifies it technically and condemns it to a double dependence, commercial and ethical. Should we give up developing our own models at the risk of letting Washington or Beijing set the standards alone?
Through LLMs (Large Language Models), there are new means of mass manipulation. This can result in censorship of current events, or rewriting of history.
“It is quite easy to “flip knobs†to reorient a model politically. For example, the Chinese government imposes on its AI a list of around 1,500 questions to which they must answer in the “right” way, for example about what happened in Tiananmen Square.
There is a question of ethics and influence here. According to Aymeric Roucher, this is an additional reason to have French or European AI, “in order to avoid these ethical and political choices being made for us abroad“. We must preserve our sovereignty in this matter, he asserts.
