Former Brazilian international, footballer Oscar almost died. When he suffered a cardiac arrest, he said he was brought back to life by the voice of his son. He was subsequently declared unfit to play high-level football and ended his professional career.
What if Oscar had been brought back to life by the voice of his son? This is the story told by this former Brazilian international, who made 48 caps with the Seleçao between 2011 and 2015. Known for having played for the Chelsea club, the one which played in the 2014 World Cup in his country and scored Brazil’s only goal during the rout historic against Germany in the semi-final (2-1), Oscar was forced to hang up his boots at the beginning of last April.

The cause was vasovagal syncope, a disease which affects his heart rate and almost cost him his life. While he was playing with the Sao Paulo club, he suffered a cardiac arrest during training last November, before his pathology was detected. That day, Oscar was in a state of clinical death for two minutes before being resuscitated. According to him, it was his son’s voice that brought him back from the dead: “I just remember hearing my son say, ‘Dad, you have to come back. Dad, you have to come back,'” as he told the Times.

The Brazilian also detailed this experience during which he came close to death: “I’ve always heard that when you’re about to die, you see yourself. I didn’t see myself, but I had a very beautiful dream, where everything was wonderful.” Now retired, Oscar can lead a normal life, but can no longer play high-level football.
