“The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah showed little sign of easing on Friday…while the “Israeli forces were bombing communities throughout southern Lebanon and ordering residents to evacuate†the region, confirm The New York Times.

“Continuing violence calls into question the agreement [de cessez-le-feu] announced this week by Israel and Lebanon following direct talks in Washington, and casts doubt on its real entry into force…adds the daily.

The hopes raised by this new ceasefire had already been significantly reduced on Thursday, when the leader of Hezbollah, Naïm Qassem, rejected the agreement, denouncing “a capitulation and a defeat†, and demanding a ceasefire “global†and the withdrawal of the Israelis from southern Lebanon.

“This is not your country”

An expected rejection, moreover, of the terms of the agreement conditioning the ceasefire “withdrawal of Hezbollah from the border area between Lebanon and Israel as well as a “complete cessation†of the group’s attacksâ€but without imposing “concession immédiate à Israëlâ€underlines The New York Times. Furthermore, Hezbollah “did not participate in the negotiations†and the Lebanese government has little means to put pressure on the group.

Powerless against Hezbollah, supported by Iran, it is against Tehran that the Lebanese authorities, tired of war, have “raised the tone†Friday, reports The Orient-The Day. “The President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, and the Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, accused Tehran of using the Lebanese front as a “bargaining chip†in its negotiations with the Americans and demanded that it cease its interference in Lebanonâ€writes the Lebanese daily.

“It’s not your country, it’s ours… President Aoun told the Iranian authorities in an interview with CNN. “We have had enough and we want to live in peace…he added. The Lebanese “deserve to live in peace and dignity. They deserve not to have their homes destroyed every five or ten years…

Thousands of evacuations

On the ground, “Thousands of people fled their homes on Friday, after Israel issued forced evacuation orders for nine villages in southern Lebanonâ€where the strikes carried out by the IDF in the wake “killed six peopleâ€according to The Guardian.

Hundreds of families left Anqoun, “a village hosting at least 2,500 displaced people, after the Israeli army announced its intention to carry out operations there†against Hezbollah. Elsewhere in the region, “Drones targeted vehicles in the Nabatieh region, while airstrikes and artillery shelling the town of Kfar Tebnitâ€specifies the British daily.

For its part, Hezbollah announced that it had carried out “32 separate strikes against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon between Thursday and Friday, hitting troops and military vehiclesâ€reports Al-Jazeera.

The Islamist group said it had used “salvos of rockets, artillery and explosive drones to target Israeli positions and stop their advanceâ€and having particularly aimed “Israeli forces positioned around historic Beaufort Castleâ€which the Israeli army seized this week.

Internationally, the foreign ministers of 11 countries, including France and Canada, as well as the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, expressed their “deep concern at the continued escalation of hostilities in Lebanonâ€.
