Ukraine intensifies its attacks on Russian territory. On Saturday June 6, Russia intercepted 86 drones in the region around Saint Petersburg, the city where a major investment forum has been taking place since Wednesday, announced the regional governor, Aleksandr Drozdenko. “Eighty-six drones were shot down over the Leningrad region. Combat operations continue,” the official wrote on Telegram.

“Saint Petersburg was the target of a large-scale attack carried out by military drones,” said the governor of the city of Saint Petersburg, Aleksandr Beglov.

“I ask the residents of Saint Petersburg to stay at home and not go out,” he added. “[Le gouverneur] warned of possible disruptions to mobile Internet and indicated that residents would be notified when the threat was over,” journalist Kevin Rothrock, editor-in-chief of the English-language edition of the Russian media Meduza, said on his X account.

Pulkovo International Airport, south of the city, announced a temporary interruption of traffic, without specifying the reason.

376 drones intercepted during the night

In total, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the interception of 376 Ukrainian drones overnight over the country. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said eight drones had been shot down as they headed toward the city.

On Wednesday, at the opening of the St. Petersburg Forum, once nicknamed the “Russian Davos” in reference to the World Economic Forum, Ukrainian drones struck a nearby oil installation and military site. Guests arriving at the event were greeted with a plume of black smoke in the background. This Forum ends on Saturday, the day after an intervention by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This new salvo of Ukrainian drones comes the day after the publication of an open letter by President Volodymyr Zelensky proposing to Vladimir Putin a ceasefire and direct negotiations to end the war. “I don’t see the point of a meeting,” replied the head of the Kremlin on Friday from the Saint Petersburg Forum.

Three dead in Ukraine

Ukraine has recently intensified its drone strikes on occupied territories and Russia in retaliation for daily Russian bombings against its territory. A drone attack also sparked a fire of some 5,000 m² in a fuel depot in Ust-Labinsk, in the Russian region of Krasnodar, according to local authorities.

In Ukraine, in the Zaporizhia region, a Russian drone attack against “essential and industrial infrastructure” left two dead, according to the local military chief, Ivan Fedorov. In that of Dnipropetrovsk, targeted “nearly 30 times with drones and artillery”, one person lost his life and three were injured in the district of Kryvyi Rig, indicated the head of the regional military administration, Oleksandr Ghanza. Ukrainian emergency services also reported drone attacks on the city of Odessa (south), which did not cause any injuries.
