Amnesty International Belgium announced on Wednesday that it had joined a complaint filed with the Liège public prosecutor’s office against FedEx Belgium for “illegal transit of weapons to Israel” via Liège airport.
In a press release published on its official website, the human rights organization indicates that it has joined a coalition of civil society associations, including Vredesactie, the Human Rights League and the National Coordination of Action for Peace and Democracy.
According to the complainants, components intended in particular for the F-35 combat aircraft used by the Israeli army would have transited through Belgium without the authorization required by Walloon legislation. Amnesty International claims that FedEx Belgium should have obtained a transit license for these shipments and that the absence of such authorization could constitute an offense under Belgian law.
The director of the French-speaking Belgian section of Amnesty International, Carine Thibaut, cited by the NGO, considered that States have the obligation to prevent any contribution to violations of international humanitarian law and called for preventing new transits of arms to Israel via Belgian territory.
The organization claims that a shipment regulated by American legislation on the arms trade would have been transported in October 2024 between the United States and Israel, passing through Liège airport before being transported to Germany and then Israel.
Amnesty International also highlights that the Walloon authorities suspended certain arms export licenses to Israel in 2024 and subsequently banned the transit of arms to this country via Liège and Charleroi airports.
Contacted by Amnesty International, FedEx Belgium indicated, through a spokesperson, that the company “is committed to respecting applicable laws and regulations” and that it does not make international deliveries of weapons or ammunition, while claiming to have put in place security procedures. strict controls to prevent this type of shipment.
