REPORTAGE – A hotel in New Delhi was ravaged by flames on Wednesday, leaving 21 dead and around forty injured. The establishment accommodated foreign patients attracted by the cost of care provided in India.
The owners of Flourish Stay had found the ideal location for their hotel. The establishment was located just opposite Max Hospital, one of the largest private hospitals in New Delhi. AIIMS, the capital’s large public hospital, is just three metro stops away.
Most of the guests staying at Flourish Stay came from Africa, Central Asia and neighboring countries. “Patients at Max Hospital do not always have medical infrastructure worthy of the name at home, unlike in India where, in addition, medicines are not expensive.”explains Shailendra Tilak, who runs a pharmacy a stone’s throw from Flourish Stay. “They come from Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Burma, Iraq, Bangladesh…â€he adds. “The managers are three brothers, businessmen who opened this hotel around ten years ago. There had never been a serious accident.”testifies a local merchant.
