“From chaos can emerge light”: meeting with Haitian filmmaker Gessica Généus

INTERNATIONAL COURIER: Today you share your life between Canada and Haiti. But, as a filmmaker, it is in Haiti that you continue to work, despite the violence and insecurity that reign there. Why?

Gessica Genèus : I came to the cinema to tell the story of Haiti. I want to document us, the Haitians – or immortalize, if you will, snippets of our lives so that we remember that we exist.

Many American films supposed to take place in Haiti have been filmed on other islands, as if the Haitians had nothing specific as a people. I can hardly imagine that. So as long as I tell Haiti, it will be with Haitians: on screen and on set, because a good part of my technical team is Haitian. Which is not easy. Using international funding requires employing technicians who come from countries that give money – but I also benefit from it, it allows me to work with extraordinary people [français et canadiens, essentiellement].
