New twist in tensions between Mexico and the United States. While the governor of the state of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya (from Morena, the presidential party), is the subject of accusations from Washington for his alleged links with drug trafficking, his former head of Security (2023-2024), Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, surrendered himself to the American authorities on Monday May 11, reports The Country America. However, the information was only communicated on May 15 by the Mexican authorities.

Gerardo Mérida is among the ten Sinaloa political leaders whom the US Department of Justice designated, Wednesday April 29, as having maintained links with “Los Chapitos†, a faction of the Sinaloa cartel led by the sons of former baron JoaquÃn “El Chapo†Guzman.

According to the American accusations, the former manager would have accepted more than 100,000 monthly dollars (around 85,000 euros) in order not to intervene in the operations of this branch of the cartel. Unprecedented accusations that have shaken the Mexican government for more than two weeks, as well as President Claudia Sheinbaum’s Morena party.
