Dozens of police cars are present and several dozen heavily armed police officers have started to surround the scene, according to images from local media.
The city’s mayor, Todd Gloria, confirmed the shootings within this Islamic center, made up of a mosque and a school.
“Given the location of the Islamic center, we consider this a hate crime until proven otherwise,” said Scott Wahl.
“All children, staff members and teachers are safe outside the Islamic center,” explained in a message a center official, Imam Taha Hassane, who described the targeting of a place of worship as “scandalous.”
“We have never experienced such tragedy. At this moment, all I can say is that we are praying for you and that we stand in solidarity with all the families in our community,” he added.
From Washington, American President Donald Trump, for his part, deplored a “terrible situation” after this shooting.
