The White House correspondents’ dinner, which Donald Trump was attending for the first time as president, turned to drama on Saturday night. A shooting broke out outside the reception hall of the Hilton hotel at the start of the gala dinner.
“Get down, sir!”, shouted one person. Others urged to duck, while some – including the American president – sought shelter under tables after hearing the loud shots.

Donald Trump, the first lady, and members of his administration, including Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were then escorted by a fleet of armed men. Some people in the crowd reported hearing what they believed to be five to eight shots.
Around 2600 guests were gathered in the hall, including hundreds of well-known journalists, celebrities, and national leaders waiting for Trump’s speech. He eventually spoke and praised the quick response of the armed guards who retaliated against the shooter.
