When the Trump administration gives theology lessons to Pope Leo

To respond to criticisms of the war in Iran by Pope Leon XIV, Donald Trump’s entourage has decided to trigger a theological dispute. Vice President JD Vance, a recent convert to Catholicism, advised the first American pope in history to be “cautious” when speaking about theology, which may come as a surprise! And House Speaker, Republican Mike Johnson, was “stunned” by the pope’s statements and opposed them with the doctrine of “just war.”

After the controversy caused by the image, later removed, of Donald Trump as Jesus, which sparked accusations of blasphemy and even Antichrist comparisons, the controversy continued. During a trip to Africa, the pope made a new reference that was shared on social media accounts, warning against those who manipulate religion and God’s name for their own military, economic, and political purposes.

While it’s not surprising for the theocratic regime of Tehran to invoke religion in its declarations of war, it was unexpected to hear the religious undertones of American warfare. The Pope is undoubtedly fulfilling his role by advocating for peace in the Middle East, but it’s possible he was annoyed to hear divine intentions used to justify American military actions.

When Mike Johnson references the doctrine of “just war,” he may think he’s making a point by alluding to a concept predating Christianity, but it’s important to note that the Church has since abandoned this concept. This highlights the increased pontifical stature that Pope Leon XIV has gained as a result of the attacks from Donald Trump and his team.

By declaring to journalists that he is “not afraid of this administration,” the American pope has shown courage that many heads of state lack for fear of repercussions from the United States. This has given him a moral edge, making him a formidable opponent to Donald Trump on moral grounds, where Trump is most vulnerable.
