IN THE FOCUS / Iran: how long will we pay the price of war?

After the announcement of an agreement between Washington and Tehran, oil prices fell, a trend which gradually had an impact on prices at the pump. In France, diesel has fallen below the symbolic bar of 2 euros per liter. Between the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the still damaged refineries and global stocks to be replenished, the economic consequences of the war in Iran will be lasting. In 2026, French growth would be +0.5%, according to forecasts from the Banque de France: a particularly low result since since 2010, only the years 2020 and 2012 have recorded a lower rate. The start of the year 2026 had “irrecoverable” effects according to Xavier Debrun, general director of the Banque de France. When can we expect a return to the pre-war economic situation?

THE ANGRY QUESTION / Should we be afraid of “new GMOs”?

On Wednesday June 17, the European Parliament voted to authorize new genomic techniques (NGT) in agriculture. Unlike that of first generation genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the genome of these “new GMOs” has been modified without the introduction of foreign DNA. These new genomic techniques can make plantations more resistant to drought or disease. This genomic “editing” technique was until now classified in the category of GMOs, all of which are banned from cultivation in the European Union. The law’s rapporteur, Swedish MEP Jessica Polfjärd (EPP, right), praises a technology which “will make it possible to obtain higher yields on smaller surfaces”. On the other hand, organic farmers are opposed to it, denouncing the impossibility of precisely assessing the health and environmental dangers linked to these new techniques. Are these “new GMOs” dangerous for health?
