Buoyed by the wars in Ukraine and then in the Middle East, the European defense sector is accelerating its hiring. In April 2026, offers will exceed their 2021 level by 65%, going against the trend of a global job market that is still in decline.

Information to remember

Why is the defense sector recruiting massively in Europe?

  • Job offers increased by 65% between 2021 and April 2026.

  • However, the overall job market remains 15% below its 2021 level.

  • The dynamic started in 2022 with the war in Ukraine and continues.

  • The most sought-after profiles are production (14.6%) and software (14.7%).

  • France accounts for 33% of offers, ahead of Germany and the United Kingdom.

The geopolitical context seems to benefit the European defense sector, according to a study by the Indeed job platform unveiled this Tuesday. It appears that the number of job offers published by the largest European companies in the sector stood at +65% last April compared to its 2021 level. At the same time, the total volume of job offers on European markets remained 15% below.

The recruitment dynamic in the European defense sector has gained momentum from 2022, the year marked by the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine. The volume of job offers in defense then greatly exceeded that of the job market as a whole. If the dynamic calmed down in 2023-2024, while maintaining this gap, it started again this spring of 2026, in the context of the war in the Middle East.
