At least 11 people were killed Monday in a series of Russian strikes on cities in Ukraine. During these strikes, a fire ravaged the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, an emblematic Orthodox building in kyiv and listed by UNESCO. We take stock.
Que s’est-il passé à Kiev ?
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired 70 missiles and 611 drones during the night, mainly targeting the capital, of which 50 and 582 respectively were intercepted. The Russian army said it had targeted military factories producing drones and munitions as well as airfields and recruitment centers.
In kyiv, at least five people were killed and in Kharkiv, four rescue workers and a municipal employee died. One person was also killed in the morning in an attack on Kherson, in southern Ukraine. Russia has promised massive “systematic” strikes on Ukraine after a Ukrainian attack on the dormitory of a high school in occupied territory, which left 21 dead.
On the Russian side, a Ukrainian drone attack against Tula, south of Moscow, left at least three dead, according to local authorities.
La cathédrale a-t-elle été volontairement ciblée ?
During these attacks, a fire hit the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, one of the churches in the famous Orthodox complex of the Pechersk Lavra of kyiv, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia “deliberately” targeted two drones at “the part of the city” where the monastery is located. Ukrainian security services said they had recovered debris from a Russian Gueran-2 drone at the impact site.
The Russian Defense Ministry denied having targeted the cathedral, which also has strong religious importance for Russia, and assured that it was hit by an American-made Patriot missile fired by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense.
Is the damage significant?
Le métropolite épiphane de Kiev, primat de l’Eglise orthodoxe d’Ukraine, a dénoncé un « crime contre l’humanité, l’Histoire, la chrétienté », tandis que l’Unesco a « condamné » l’attaque.
A facade of the building was gutted, its roof partially destroyed, but the icons inside appeared intact. According to a rescuer, the interior of this building dating from the 11th century, rebuilt after its destruction during the Second World War, has been preserved. “Most of the damage concerns the roof, we are in the process of clearing the rubble and removing the damaged goods,” he explained.
kyiv’s Dormition Cathedral has already been lightly damaged twice by Russian attacks, according to kyiv. “Nothing justifies this attack on our universal heritage,” reacted French President Emmanuel Macron on X.
