It must have been imminent, according to Donald Trump’s repeated announcements. It was ultimately the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the mediating country in negotiations between Iran and the United States, who declared that Washington and Tehran had reached a peace agreement on Sunday June 14. “Both parties declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”said Shehbaz Sharif on X. The Pakistani Prime Minister clarified that “the official signing ceremony will take place on Friday June 19 in Switzerland”.

The agreement “is now finalized”Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform shortly after. “Therefore, I fully authorize the free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and, simultaneously, I authorize the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade. Ships of the world, start the engines. Let the oil flow!”he added.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told Iranian state television that the deal with the United States “end immediately to the war”, “including in Lebanon”. Iran has “imposed his divine and steely will on humiliated American and Zionist enemies. The enemy has no choice but to accept defeat and surrender”welcomed the Iranian general staff for its part in a press release broadcast by state television.

“Now that the agreement is concluded, the mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week. These pre-implementation discussions [de l’accord] will lay the foundation for technical talks and the official signing ceremony.”wrote Shehbaz Sharif, the Pakistani Prime Minister, who has acted as intermediary since the start of the conflict on February 28.

The agreement provides “the immediate and definitive end of the war and military operations on the various fronts, including in Lebanon”added Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi on state television. “Negotiations will begin within 60 days with a view to reaching a final agreement”he said, listing four subjects for future discussions: the lifting of sanctions against Iran, the nuclear issue, the “reconstruction” et “economic development” of the country, as well as “the establishment of a monitoring mechanism” commitments made.

The Iranian Mehr news agency also reported a text, which has not been officially confirmed, according to which the agreement provides “the release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets during the 60-day negotiation period”half of which before the start of the talks. In statements to New York TimesDonald Trump indicated that one aspect of the negotiations concerns the acceptance by Iran of a 20-year moratorium on uranium enrichment, and suggested that an agreement could be found for a period of 15 years.

Shortly before the announcement of the agreement, Iran’s highest security body, the Supreme National Security Council, had nevertheless warned X of a response “imminent” to an Israeli raid which left three dead on Sunday in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of pro-Iranian Hezbollah. Israel, which fears a compromise that would not meet its demands regarding its sworn enemy Iranian, indicated that it had responded to Hezbollah drone attacks against its territory.
