“The Charles-de-Gaulle remains in the area until further notice. No decision has been taken otherwise”declared to franceinfo, Sunday June 14, the spokesperson for the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, while certain media mention the departure of the French aircraft carrier from the Eastern Mediterranean to undergo a maintenance operation in Toulon.
“Every vessel of the National Navy is subject to a maintenance plan and technical deadlines but these can be delayed and operational contingencies take precedence”he adds and recalls that “France is particularly involved in maintaining freedom of navigation.”
After the outbreak of war in the Middle East, the French aircraft carrier Charles-de-Gaulle has been positioned since March in the Eastern Mediterranean, France standing ready to ensure in an international framework the security of the Strait of Hormuz if negotiations between Tehran and Washington allow its unblocking.
