After weeks of laborious negotiations and repeatedly dashed hopes, are we in the home stretch? Iran and the Pakistani mediator affirmed on Friday June 12 that an agreement with the United States was close to end three and a half months of conflict in the Middle East. “As soon as the final stages of our negotiations are completed, this agreement will be signed and announced”declared the head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Araghchi, on state television. “It could happen in the next few days. I’m hopeful.”at-il déclaré.
The minister affirmed that the draft agreement provided for the lifting of the American blockade of Iranian ports and a new management of the Strait of Hormuz. However, he accused Israel of seeking “prétextes” to do “to derail” a possible agreement with Washington.
Same positive tone from the side of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, main negotiator in the conflict. “Peace has never been closer than today”according to Shehbaz Sharif. “We can confirm that agreement on the final text of the peace agreement has been reached and that Pakistan is now working with both parties to finalize the next steps.”wrote the manager on X.
Switzerland has already offered to host a possible signing, while a G7 summit in the presence of Donald Trump is due to begin on Monday in the French town of Evian-les-Bains, near Geneva. But Tehran said that once finalized, the memorandum of understanding would be signed “Ã distance”. The markets are betting on such an outcome, with oil falling below $90 per barrel.
