More than 200 journalists lost their lives during Israeli military operations in Gaza, and around fifteen in Lebanon. Why did they become targets? Who benefits from these crimes? In this new issue of “La Guerre de l’info”, “Complément d’enquête” attempts to answer these questions.
More than 200 journalists killed in the Gaza Strip, around fifteen in Lebanon. Informing has become a very high-risk mission in these territories. Never has a conflict in recent history seen so many reporters killed. How can we explain such a massacre?
Since the massacres of October 7, 2023 perpetrated by Hamas, Gaza has become a territory prohibited to foreign reporters. To testify about this war behind closed doors, international editorial teams are obliged to use local journalists. They have become the eyes and ears of media around the world.
But they pay a heavy price for their information mission. Reporters Without Borders has filed 5 complaints with the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed by the Israeli army against journalists.
According to the NGO, 70 reporters were intentionally targeted by the IDF, which accused them of having links with Hamas. These accusations are relayed by sites which claim to fight against disinformation targeting Israeli politics. In France, they fuel the distrust of part of public opinion with regard to the coverage of this conflict in the Middle East.
Some profiles raise questions, such as those of the Gazan journalists who documented the massacres of October 7, 2023. What were their links with Hamas? Were they part of a communication system designed before the assault? In Israel, five families filed a complaint against international news agencies who published their photos.
An investigation by Rola Tarsissi, Mathieu Dreujou and Vincent Buchy.
