The Ukrainian military says the Third Army Corps now has “drone control” of key Russian logistics routes in the occupied Luhansk region.

According to a press release from the Third Ukrainian Army Corps relayed in particular by Ukrinform, a vast drone operation was launched to “take control” of Russian logistics routes in the occupied part of the Luhansk region. The Ukrainian command claims that the attack drones struck ammunition depots, armored vehicles and transit points on the axes used to supply Russian forces, particularly in the direction of Donbass and Crimea.

The 3rd Corps headquarters reported a strike as far as the Izvaryne border post, more than 205 km behind the front line, presented as one of the largest known strike distances for Ukrainian drones in this sector. This depth allows Kyiv to speak of a logistical “lock” on part of the Russian system, even if the real extent of the damage has not been independently documented.

Against Moscow’s claims

In a statement reported by Ukrinform, Censor.net and several news portals, the commander of the Third Army Corps, Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, claims that “Luhansk, Starobilsk, Alchevsk, Brianka and Kadiivka are now under the control of the fighters’ drones of the Third Unmanned Systems Assault Battalion of the Third Army Corps. He presents this operation as a direct response to Russian declarations according to which Moscow has “entirely captured” the Luhansk region.

Analysis centers like the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) prefer to talk about “drone…enabled fire control”, in other words a capacity to threaten and disrupt the use of roads through repeated strikes, rather than air or territorial control in the sense classic.Â

Series of long-range strikes

Euromaidan Press and Kyiv Post describe this operation as a new stage in Ukraine’s drone war against Russian logistical backlogs, after a series of long-range strikes in Donbass and towards Crimea.

Western experts note that although the term “takeover of the Luhansk region” is largely war rhetoric, the increase in Ukrainian drone strikes more than 200 km from the front line effectively complicates the safe and regular use of the main supply routes by the Russian occupiers in the oblast.
