The IDF released images this Monday of its troops in action within the medieval fortress of Beaufort, in southern Lebanon, after its capture last weekend. Several heavily harnessed Israeli soldiers advance, weapons pointed in front of them, on the cobblestones and between the walls of this medieval castle which overlooks the Litani River.

Some images appear to come from onboard cameras worn by soldiers, whose faces are systematically blurred. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described «tournant décisif» the takeover of this historic site as part of the Israeli offensive against pro-Iranian Hezbollah.

Strategic and historical site

Located on a ridge at an altitude of 670 meters, the Beaufort Fortress offers a clear view of southern Lebanon, but also of northern Israel. This geographical location makes it an ideal site for rocket and drone attacks operated by pro-Iranian Hezbollah.

The capture of this citadel built by the Crusaders in the 12th centurye century and protected by UNESCO opens the way for the progression of the Israeli army towards the region of Nabatiyé. The Israeli army had already occupied it between 1984 and 2000 during the previous Lebanese War. The UN Security Council must meet urgently this Monday at the request of France after this new coup by Israel in Lebanon.
