War in the Middle East: Donald Trump still hesitates to sign a bad deal with Iran

RÉCIT – Tehran continues to deprive the American president of a diplomatic victory and instead offers only compromises that are difficult to accept.

Trump hesitates over a compromise agreement with Iran. Friday, after announcing once again that a signature was imminent, the president emerged from the Situation Room, the situation room of the White House, without having made a decision. The memorandum of understanding negotiated through Pakistan provides for the end of military operations American-Israeli forces in exchange for the lifting by Tehran of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which was open to navigation before the war which began on February 28. In return, the United States agrees to lift its naval blockade against Iranian ports.

But this return to status quo ante doesn’t look like “Total victory” announced by Trump for weeks. And it leaves aside the most difficult questions, such as that of the Iranian nuclear program, postponed to later negotiations. In its current form, Iran would undertake not to acquire nuclear weapons, but does not provide for any specific concessions…
