As the United States threatened to resume attacks on Iran, Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir said Wednesday that the Israel Defense Forces were at the “highest level of alert.”

JERUSALEM, May 20 (Xinhua) — As the United States threatened to resume attacks on Iran, Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir said Wednesday that the Israel Defense Forces were at the “highest level of alert.”

Zamir made the statements during a meeting with all division commanders aimed at assessing troop readiness and progress in Israel’s fighting on several fronts, according to a statement issued by the army.

During the meeting, Mr. Zamir and the commanders carried out an “assessment of the operational situation” and discussed the state of preparedness of the forces as well as the continuation of the fighting in different theaters, the press release said.

Zamir said the army had carried out “systematic, powerful and progressive strikes” against Iran and its allies in recent years, and was consolidating its forces in several border areas.

He added that the army needed to increase its active duty strength to carry out its missions and ease pressure on reservists, calling it a “crucial issue” for the army’s operational capacity.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States would act “very quickly” if Iran does not give “the right answer” during negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement between the two sides.
