SEOUL, May 19 (Yonhap) — Israeli forces boarded a humanitarian aid flotilla headed to the Gaza Strip that included a South Korean activist, a civic group campaigning for Palestinian liberation said.

The Kyriakos X carrying activist Kim Dong-hyeon was intercepted by the Israeli army on Monday around 8 p.m. (South Korean time). Kim appears to be being held aboard an Israeli warship with other activists from different parts of the world, an official with the group said.

Kim left for Gaza earlier this month despite a government ban on travel to the region.

Before him, another activist, Kim Ah-hyun, headed to Gaza despite the government’s revocation of her passport after her previous attempt to enter the territory without authorization last October. At the time, she had been detained by Israeli forces before being released.

The civic group noted that the boat she is currently traveling on was near the Kyriakos X and was therefore at risk of capture as well.

South Koreans are banned from traveling or staying in the Gaza Strip without government permission, and violators face up to a year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won ($6,685) under the Passport Law.
