After the attack by the American army against two Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, Iran threatened on Saturday to attack American infrastructure in the region.
Iran threatened, this Saturday, May 9 in the evening, to attack American interests in the region in the event of an attack on its merchant navy, the day after strikes against two of its oil tankers.
“Any attack on Iranian oil tankers and commercial ships will result in a heavy response against one of the American centers in the region as well as against enemy ships,” warned the Revolutionary Guards, Tehran’s ideological army.
“Missiles and drones are aimed at the enemy and we are waiting for the order to fire,” added the commander of the Guards navy, General Majid Mousavi, according to comments reported by the Isna news agency and the national television Irib.
Attacks in the Gulf of Oman
A month after the ceasefire in the war between Iran and the Israeli-American allies, these threats also come the day after attacks by the United States against two Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
The American army, which has imposed a blockade of Iranian ports since April 13, announced that it had “neutralized” by air the two vessels in this access to the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the oil consumed in the world normally passes.
If the ships were not carrying cargo according to the army, images released by the US military command for the region (Centcom) show thick columns of smoke escaping from the cockpits.
Strait of Hormuz blocked
Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the Israeli-American offensive on February 28, seriously disrupting the world economy.
Naval skirmishes between Washington and Tehran have increased since the start of the month, while negotiations seem to be at a standstill awaiting an Iranian response to American proposals.
Donald Trump expects to receive a response “very soon”, the LCI television channel reported on Saturday, after a brief interview with the American president. He had already said the day before that he expected to receive “a letter” in the evening.
Iran questions “seriousness” of the United States
Iran on Saturday questioned the seriousness of American diplomacy in negotiations to find a solution to the conflict in the Middle East, which has left thousands dead, mainly in Iran and Lebanon.
“The recent escalation of tensions by American forces and their multiple violations of the ceasefire reinforce suspicions about the motivation and seriousness of the American side on the path of diplomacy,” declared Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
